In Memoriam: Jay Wagle

*John S. "Jay" Wagle III, 63, of DeKalb, Ill., passed away Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 24, 1946, in Wichita, Kan., the son of John S. and Clarella (McCluggage) Wagle Jr. He married Sandra Naglich on Nov. 29, 1975, in Pueblo, Colo.

Jay was in the Army Reserves 403rd, where he served as a chaplain assistant. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in marketing from Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Jay then went on to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska. He was a member of the Marketing Department at Ohio University and was a professor at Northern Illinois University, where he served a term as the campuswide honors director. At NIU, he started the Marketing Honors Society and reestablished Phi Eta Sigma Honors Society. He retired from NIU in 2006 and was made a professor emeritus. He was on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Business Hall of Fame for 16 years. Over the years, he had consulted with various companies, such as Motorola, Dow Chemical and NASA in 1969 during the moon landing.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; three children, Jennifer Wagle of Rockford and John S. Wagle IV and Casandra Wagle, both of DeKalb; grandson, Jakob Frericks of Rockford; sister, Candy (Larry) Ketch of Austin, Texas; two nieces, Angela (John) Bisson of Austin and Suzi Ketch of Arlington, Texas; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He will be truly and deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his nephew, L. Adam Ketch.

Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at First Congregational Church, 615 N. First St., DeKalb, with the Rev. Joseph Gastiger officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 at Anderson Funeral Home, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb. Cremation will take place at the Anderson Funeral Home Crematory.
